Points to ponder

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

In a letter to A.H. Stephens by M.J. Crawford written April 8, 1860, he writes:

“You are aware that the people at the North are all educated by government, and where educated they expect to live upon government, either town, county, city, state, or national, and they will do it…. This idea of educating everybody is taking root in the South, our people are beginning to demand taxes for the education of the masses, there is to be no more ignorant after this generation according to the new philososphy, upon the idea that its easier to build schoolhouses than jails and colleges than state prisons, but there never was a greater error upon earth, we can build the latter much cheaper and they are decidedly more useful…
“I am not sure but that you may educate two or three generations and about the third they will go crazy, as for instance in New England they are fanatical and foolish.”

Discuss (or not)
